Rocha (April 4, 2022, 7:23 p.m. EDT) – The National Congress of American Indians has expressed its support for Victor Manuel Castro-Huerta and the decision of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals in a case in the United States Supreme Court, arguing that expanding state jurisdiction over crimes against Indians would undermine federal law and public safety in tribal land.
In an amicus brief filed Friday, the NCAI, the largest organization representing American Indians and Alaska Natives, said it had a relevant interest in the case, saying that allowing jurisdiction of the state in tribal territory for crimes committed by non-Native Americans against Native Americans people would “sabotage” the safety of Native Americans.
