Santa Barbara Humane’s solid financial health and ongoing accountability and transparency have earned it a 100/100 rating from Charity Navigator’s Encompass rating system. This score designates Santa Barbara Humane as an official Give with Confidence charity, indicating that the organization is using its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator criteria.

Charity Navigator is the largest and most widely used independent charity appraiser in the United States.

The Encompass Scoring System is a comprehensive assessment tool that analyzes the performance of nonprofits against four key metrics.

In July 2020, Charity Navigator released the first indicator, Finance & Accountability, to highlight nonprofits demonstrating fiscal responsibility. This is determined by five parameters: the program expense ratio, independent audit or financial review, composition of the board of directors, liabilities to assets and listing of websites.

In October 2020, this was followed by the second indicator, Impact & Results, measuring how well a nonprofit is fulfilling its mission. The additional metrics, which will be rolled out over the next 18-24 months, are Leadership & Adaptability and Culture & Community.

The system uses a combination of automated methods and technology-backed manual research and analysis to provide donors and nonprofits with four clearly visualized indicators of organizational effectiveness.

“We are delighted to provide Santa Barbara Humane with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. “We look forward to seeing the good work the organization is able to do in the years to come. “

Since its founding in 1887, Santa Barbara Humane has provided services to animals in need. With a focus on safety net programs, donor dollars fund high quality and affordable veterinary care, dog training, and a place for thousands of animals to have another chance at a home. loving through adoption.

“Our Charity Navigator rating of 100 out of 100 through their Encompass rating system is further confirmation that our supporters can trust our commitment to good governance and making the world a better place,” said CEO Kerri Burns. “We hope he will introduce our work to new supporters who can help us further our mission of being champions of animals and people who love them.”

The two Santa Barbara Humane campuses in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara offer increased support to animals and pet owners throughout the county. This recognition confirms that donor funds are being spent responsibly at a time when they have never been needed more.

A dramatic shift has occurred in the need for pet owner services as pet owners struggle to afford life-saving veterinary care due to financial hardship. Requests are up 300% from 2020, with 3,000 families now in need of help, and donors are making sure no pets are turned away for the vital care they need.
